1. Make them a mini road playset for the car.
2. Suggest they play a game of finger Twister.
3. If you're travelling in more than one car, give the kids a walkie-talkie so that they can communicate with the other set of passengers.
4. Make a car box: a mysterious, brightly coloured box that will magically appear next to their seats for every journey.
5. Show older kids how to make woven friendship bracelets.
6. Get them to make a car playlist before they go.
7. Make the journey part of the trip.
8. Get them to make origami presents for people at the other end.
Tell your kids that origami paper cranes or folded paper stars are good luck, and teach them how to make them a few days before you go. Buy some pretty paper and have them fold good luck charms for everyone you'll meet on your journey – from hotel staff to their grandparents.
