A Washington, D.C., police officer shot a woman Saturday as she stood in the street with a knife.
Officer Sean Hickman of the Metropolitan Police Department confirmed to BuzzFeed News an officer opened fire at a woman. In a statement, police later said that crews were responding to a fire at about 6:15 p.m. when they received a call about a woman with a knife.
"Upon reaching the location they located a female suspect, who produced a knife and confronted the officers," the statement said. "As the suspect approached them, an officer fired one shot at the suspect, who sustained a gunshot wound."
The statement did not include details about the woman's condition after being shot, but said that as of early Sunday morning she was at a hospital receiving treatment.
Video purporting to show the shooting quickly circulated on social media.
In the video, the woman stands a few feet away from a police officer who has his gun raised. The police officer can be seen speaking — though from the video it isn't clear what he is saying — while the woman steps back and forth. Members of the crowd can be heard yelling for the woman to "put the knife down."
After several seconds, a loud pop can be heard and the camera pans away.
The origin of the video was not immediately clear, though it included a watermark of a Instagram account that was set to private Saturday evening.
