A Woman Has Written A Heartbreaking Farewell To The Dying Dog She Adopted In Order To Make His Final Days Happy

"I am heartbroken, but at the same time I wouldn't have wanted it any other way. I held him until his last breath and then some."

Chester, the terminally-ill dog who enjoyed a blissful final few weeks of life after being adopted from an animal shelter by a Georgia family, died Friday, according to a heartbreaking Facebook post.

The dying dog was adopted by Nicole Elliott and her family last month in order to give him the best final days possible.

Elliott told BuzzFeed News that she saw a post on Facebook from a local animal shelter featuring Chester, and felt compelled to help.

The title of the post was "hospice needed," because Chester is dying of cancer. The pup was saved from a kill shelter in April by Animal Ark Rescue, and was in rough shape.

Chester had surgery to remove a large tumor, but the tumors kept coming back. Surgery is no longer an option for him.

"Chester is the sweetest little guy and we are looking for that special someone that would let him live out his life in the comfort of a home," the shelter said.

Elliott said that she was charmed by the "handsome" Chester and decided she wanted to "try to make his remaining days full of love, and fun."

Since Chester's time was limited, Elliott decided to make the rest of his life epic. She made him a "bucket list" and filled his days with treats and activities. The first thing she did was take him on a shopping spree.

He also made new friends.

And hung out with his "little sister."

The pup also made the most of the summer by enjoying some ice cream...

And trips to the beach.

"He loved the water!" Elliott wrote.

Chester and his story soon began to blow up online, with his Facebook page gathering 11,000 likes in a few weeks.

And for Elliott, she said the experience of loving Chester has also been incredibly rewarding. "Chester has returned the love tenfold! He is such a sweet boy."
