8 Reasons Why You Should Care About Super Pollutants

So you say you've never heard of super pollutants. I'm not surprised. Frankly, they're one of the best-kept climate-warming secrets around. But despite their low profile, these pollutants (HFCs, found in air conditioners and refrigators; methane, from oil and gas production and landfills; and black carbon, otherwise knowns as soot) are everywhere. In case that’s not enough, here are 8 reasons you should care:

    1. Super pollutants are super potent. In fact, some are tens of thousands of times more potent than carbon dioxide - the leading culprit behind global warming.

    2. Super pollutants cause FORTY percent of all global warming. You heard that right. Forty percent.

    3. The chemical that keeps your refrigator cool (and free of ghosts) is a super pollutant. When it leaks, it warms the atmosphere at a rate 1400 times that of carbon dioxide.

    4. By 2070, sea level is projected to rise by up to one yard. That’s no day at the beach.

    5. Thankfully, reducing super pollutants is pretty cheap — and the technologies needed to do it are made right here in the good ol’ US of A.

    6. Who doesn’t love cute penguins? If we reduce super pollutant emissions, we can cut the rate of warming the Arctic by two thirds (you’re welcome, little guys).

    7. When we’re talking about the impact that reducing super pollutants could have on the environment, we aren’t talking small. We’re talking DRAMATIC.

    8. The technology to reduce super pollutants in the atmosphere already exists! Now that’s something to get excited about.

    One last thing…
