Salman Khan's Five-Year Jail Sentence Has Been Suspended By Bombay High Court

    Thirteen years after a hit-and-run took a man's life and left others injured, the Bombay High Court has suspended the five-year sentence for accused actor Salman Khan, who was driving under the influence of alcohol that night.

    Salman Khan has been sentenced to five years in jail for culpable homicide. If the actor choses to apply for bail, he will have to submit that appeal to the High Court.

    A sessions court in Mumbai released a verdict on the 2002 hit-and-run case of Salman Khan on Wednesday, finding him guilty of all charges in his 2002 hit-and-run case.

    While Khan still maintains that he was not driving the car, Judge D.W. Deshpande has ruled that all charges against the actor have been proven to be true, including driving under the influence of alcohol and culpable homicide.

    Arguments between the prosecution and the defence regarding the quantum of punishment were conducted on the same day, and the court has slapped Khan with a five year sentence for culpable homicide.

    On 28 September 2002, Salman Khan’s car ran into the American Express bakery in Bandra, Mumbai, resulting in the death of one person sleeping on the pavement outside the bakery and the injury of three others.

    He was subsequently arrested for “rash and negligent” driving and charged with culpable homicide. The charge was later dropped.

    V.S. Patil charged the actor with “culpable homicide not amounting to murder”, to which Khan has pleaded not guilty.

    NDTV reported that the court might file perjury charges against Khan's driver Ashok Singh.

    The case has created headlines consistently for its many twists and turns.

    According to The Indian Express, the police provided tight security to the court house in order to keep the actor's wide fan base from entering the building. Only members of the media, lawyers, and official staff of the court house have been allowed into the room.

    Khan arrived at the sessions court with his bodyguards at 10:30 a.m. this morning and was proclaimed guilty of all charges at around 11:20 a.m.

    After the verdict was announced, media reports state that the media and the police who were securing the court house engaged in a physical altercation.

    Khan's defence have also argued that he is suffering from a brain condition that will become worse if he is sent to jail.

    They are also reportedly submitting balance sheets of the Being Human Foundation, Khan's charitable organisation, to showcase his contribution to society.
