As told to us by an expert.
I know, you've heard this one before. But when you're growing out your hair, frequent trims are key.
"There will be awkward phases to the shape, so it's my best recommendation as you grow out a short cut to commit to a stylist with goals in mind, as it will need minimal shape-ups along the way — ideally every three to four months," Fitzpatrick says.
Okay, but what about for bangs?
"As the bangs grow in, have the bluntness of your bangs softened with a trim so that they move to the side more easily."
OKAY, FINE, I'LL DO IT.
In my experience, the nice (???) thing about Mistake Hair is that it pushes you out of your comfort zone. According to Fitzpatrick, you should lean into that follicular discomfort by trying out a bunch of different ~lewks~.
"Switch up your style often so you don't feel defeated!" she advises. "Try slicking the sides back to create a faux pompadour, or molding it into finger waves. Apply DevaCurl Ultra Defining Gel to wet hair to ensure that you are locking in more moisture and then mold the hair into the position that you want. Or use DevaCurl Beautiful Mess to embrace the awkwardness and encourage texture and movement."
When I was growing my pixie, I also had good luck with TGI Manipulator Matte Gel for hold.
Get a 12 oz. bottle of Ultra Defining Gel for $22 at Sephora, a 3.8 oz. Get a tub of Beautiful Mess at Jet for $18.40. Get a 2 oz. tub of Manipulator Matte Gel on Amazon for $9.09.
Fitzpatrick recommends adding some hair flair during those in-between stages: "Have fun with bobby pins, barrettes, headbands, or a flower to add some sparkle to your style."
Get the bandana bow headband from Forever 21 for $3.90. Get the hand barrette from for $9.50 and the velvet headband for $16 from Asos.
Because I'm essentially self-interested, I asked Fitzpatrick about growing out bangs in particular.
"Bobby bins are your friend!" she says. "Again, twisting the hair out of your face or braiding the bangs into the style will help minimize your frustration. I even recommend a mini-pompadour style or slicked back altogether."
I've taken this one to heart in a serious way. I usually use use tried-and-true Goody SlideProofs, but I'm also loving these simple, colorful pins that I bought on a whim. They're cute without being fussy, and they make me hate my weird wing-bangs less.
Get a pack of 60 SlideProof bobby pins on Amazon for $4.15. Get a pack of 12 colored bobby pins at Of a Kind for $8.
It might sound like an old wives' tale, but people swear by silk pillowcases for hair preservation. And as anyone who's growing out their hair knows, you gotta hold on to what you got.
Promising review: "I'm IN LOVE with my new pillowcase. I've had it for almost a week and I've noticed a significant change in my skin and don't have as much hair breakage." —Amazon Customer
