Ava DuVernay’s “13th” Trailer Provides Some Hard Truths About Our Prison System

    The film makes the argument that slavery never ended.

    In anticipation of its premiere at the New York Film Festival on Sept. 30, Netflix has released the trailer for Ava DuVernay’s documentary 13th.

    The documentary explores the impact of the exception of criminals in the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery...

    And, given the numerous police shootings that've killed black men in recent weeks, the documentary is more relevant than ever.

    And touches on how the mass incarceration of black americans has lead to a multi-billion dollar industry.

    The trailer also leaves viewers with a few chilling statistics, like this one: "We now have more African Americans under criminal supervision than all the slaves back in the 1850s."

    13th will launch globally on Netflix on Oct. 7 and will have a limited theatrical release.
