Betbadal earned a degree in Chemistry from Cal Poly, Pomona.

"Benneta left the house Wednesday morning, excited about a presentation she was scheduled to give to her supervisors and coworkers at their annual meeting," the Go Fund Me page states. "It is the ultimate irony that her life would be stolen from her that day by what appears to be the same type of extremism that she fled so many years ago."

On Facebook, the nonprofit Assyrian American Association of Southern California posted their condolences: "It is with heavy hearts and tremendous sadness that the Assyrian American Association of Southern California offers its deepest condolences to the family of Bennetta Betbadal."

Nguyen was planning to marry her longtime boyfriend San Trinh in 2017, her uncle told Newsday.

"She was excited about trying on her wedding dress," Phu Nguyen said.

Trinh, a mechanical engineer, said that he and Nguyen were saving up for a house together, where her mother would live with them, and had specific plans for their marriage and the number of children they would have.

"If I could tell people anything from this experience," Trinh told the LA Times, 'I'd say: 'Whatever you're planning, don't push it off. Get it done.'"
