These DIY Water Tricks Will Absolutely Melt Your Mind

What you need:

Glass, water, and printed arrows.

How to:

Simply pour the water in the glass in front of the arrows and watch it magically flip.

Science:

Light refracts or bends when it passes from one material to another. It also acts like a magnifying glass, bending the light towards the center.

What you need:

Water, pepper, bowl, and soap.

How to:

Fill the bowl with water and sprinkle the pepper on top. Notice when you touch it with your finger nothing happens. Put some soap on your finger, touch it again, and watch the pepper spread like magic.

Science:

Due to surface tension, the pepper floats on top. The soap interferes with the hydrogen bond between water molecules, breaking the surface tension. Naturally, water molecules are strongly attracted to each other. So when the surface tension breaks, the water spreads out. It's attracted to the outside water molecules, making it spread out and taking the pepper particles with it.

What you need:

Water, 2 shot glasses, whiskey and a card.

How to:

Fill one glass with water and one with the alcohol. Place the card on the glass filled with water. Flip it carefully using the card to prevent it from spilling. Place it on top of the glass with alcohol and move the card slightly to create a small gap. Wait about 10 min. and watch the water switch places with the alcohol.

Science:

Liquids have different densities. The Jack simply floats up because it’s lighter than the water.

What you need:

Water, candle, lighter, and balloons.

How to:

Fill a balloon with water. Light the candle. Slowly place it on the candle. Amazingly enough it doesn't pop! But leave it too long and it will.

Science:

Water obviously absorbs heat well. The water inside the balloon absorbs the heat from the flame, cooling the rubber down and preventing it from breaking.

What you need:

Water, plastic bottle and laser.

How to:

Place a small hole on the lower part of the bottle. Fill it up with water, make sure to hold the hold so it doesn't spill. Point the laser directly on the hole. Let the water stream out and hold your hand below it. The laser is now reflected on your hand!

Science:

In this case, the light does not completely bend. The water stream acts like a fiber optic, carrying the light. When the laser hits the stream, it is reflected inside the stream, giving the illusion of bending light.

What you need:

Tonic water and UV light.

How to:

Simply turn of the lights and shine the UV light onto the tonic water.

Science:

Tonic water contains “phosphors”, like in the dye from highlighter pens. Phosphors turns UV light into visible light, making your tonic water glow.

What you need:

Water, glass bottle, plastic mesh or wire screen, rubber band, and toothpicks.

How to:

Cut a small square piece of the screen, place it on the mouth of the bottle and secure it with the rubber band. Fill it up completely with water through the mesh. Cover the mouth of the bottle and flip it, don't worry it won't spill. Now push the toothpicks through the screen and it still doesn't spill!

Science:

Cohesive properties of water cause it to form a bond in small openings of the screen, creating a “membrane” that essentially seals the mouth of the bottle. The outside air pressure is also greater than the pressure of the air pockets inside, holding the water up.

When the toothpick is pushed, the water wraps itself around the toothpick due to it’s cohesive property. Once the toothpick is through, the water releases it and floats up since it’s less dense than the water.

What you need:

Purified water and a freezer.

How to:

Place the purified water in the freezer. Get it to about 32°F, you can monitor it with a thermometer. You can also do guess work by placing multiple water bottles and testing them out every 30 min. For us, it took about 1 hour in the freezer. Carefully take them out, or they might transform ice crystals already. Transform the water by hitting the bottle. You can also pour the water on ice or anything that's cold. You now created an instant slushy. (this may also work on sodas or beers)

Science:

Water normally freezes below 32°F or 0°C forming ice crystals. Impurities in the water can activate the crystallization. The absence of these impurities in purified water keeps it in a liquid state below freezing point. Hitting it or touching the ice activates the crystallization, since it’s already at freezing point, instantly turning the water into ice.
