Barack Obama's Proposal To Michelle Reminds Me Of Chandler's Proposal On "Friends" And I Can't Stop Thinking About It

I never thought I would compare Barack Obama to Chandler Bing and yet here we are.

You hear the term "couple goals" banded around quite a lot these days, but what does it actually mean? Well, let's find out — Siri, show us the definition of couple goals please.

Just in case you didn't understand the first definition, let's try again. Siri, show us another picture of couple goals.

Well, I guess you can't deny facts! Barack and Michelle Obama make the sweetest couple ever. And just in case you doubted it, in her new memoir, Becoming, Michelle opened up about the moment that Barack proposed to her, and while it's super cute, I can't help but think of another famous proposal that sounds a little similar...

So, it turns out that the couple were actually on opposite ends of the spectrum when it came to the idea of marriage — Michelle, who described herself as a traditionalist, wanted to tie the knot, while Barack wasn't so keen on the concept of marriage at all.

And while at dinner one night, Barack brought the subject up once more. Michelle wrote in the book: "He reached for my hand and said that as much as he loved me with his whole being, he still didn't really see the point."

Michelle fought back, saying, "If we're committed, why wouldn't we formalise that commitment? What part of your dignity would be sacrificed by that?"

Describing the ensuing argument, Michelle wrote:

We weren't fighting, but we were quarrelling, and doing it attorney-style. We punched and counterpunched, dissected and cross-examined, though it was clearly I who was more inflamed. It was I who was doing most of the talking.

But all was not as it seemed, because Barack had actually been planning for this heated discussion to happen and had a little surprise up his sleeve...

Eventually our waiter came around holding a dessert plate, covered by a silver lid. He slid it in front of me and lifted the cover. I was almost too miffed to even look down, but when I did, I saw a dark velvet box where the chocolate cake was supposed to be. Inside it was a diamond ring.

I'm sorry but this is the most adorable thing I've ever read in my entire life and I suddenly want to get married immediately.

Michelle continued that he "dropped to one knee then and with an emotional hitch in his voice asked sincerely if I'd please do him the honour of marrying him." Barack even went to see Michelle's mother and brother beforehand to ask for their approval.

But wait a minute — is it just me who read this and suddenly remembered another proposal that sounds kinda similar? I'm thinking of a very famous TV proposal that had everybody in tears. Step up to the stand, Mr and Mrs Bing.

Never in my life did I think I would ever compare Barack Obama to Chandler Bing, but if you remember correctly, Chandler did a similar thing by purposefully telling Monica he didn't want to get married so that she'd be surprised when he actually did propose.

In one heated discussion, Chandler asks why anybody would want to get married, to which Monica responds: "Why? To celebrate your relationship? To solidify your commitment? To declare your love for one another to the world?"

I mean, come on, that basically sounds the same as Michelle telling Barack, "If we're committed, why wouldn't we formalise that commitment?"

In fact, just like Barack and Michelle, Chandler and Monica have an argument about marriage over dinner, with Chandler claiming to think that "the whole concept of marriage is unnatural".

Obviously Chandler wasn't quite as smooth as Barack though, as his plan backfires and almost results in Monica getting back with Richard.

We'll never know for sure, but I'd like to think that just like Michelle and Barack, Monica and Chandler would still be living happily ever after all these years later.
